Given the technological revolutionary innovations of the last few decades, capitalists per se have no choice but to oppose wage increases, though shortened hours make sense. Capitalism is all about extracting wealth from the economy for the benefit of those who "own the means of production", and not at all about the well-being or even the lives of those from whose labor that wealth is extracted into accessible, monetizable form. The only caveat is that enough people have to be left alive with enough income to create markets. Adam Smith understood the dangers of unregulated free markets. He counted on Christianity to keep the worst of the system in check. But he was not able to foresee the technological revolution we're in, nor was he able to provide an antidote to Christianity of the self-centered, self-aggrandizing, unrepentant sort exemplified by Trump.
