Take a look at this bar graph and note the differences in primary affiliations by state.

Iowa is only one of two states where White Mainline Protestants have a very slight lead over the next two top groups.

A big chunk of US states have either the Roman Catholic Church as their top religious group while another big chunk has "unaffiliated" the largest Christian group. In 17 states (if I counted correctly) White Evangelical Protestantism is the largest group.

What that says to me is that the SBC and other White Evangelical Protestants are likely more easily heard and more known in those 17 states than quite a few of the others. The majority of those states are in the south.

I'm thinking "non-denominational" are in the mix with "Protestant Evangelical" in the chart I posted. The national average is that 18 Percent for that demographic. "Unaffiliated" from what I remember from the presentation by PRRI at the Academy of Parish Clergy conference refers to people without a church affiliation not non-denom churches. So at most on average 18% of people would have much of a chance to know who Moore is.

If it makes you feel good to think that a lot of people know who Moore is it doesn't matter to me. But I'm not buying that outside of evangelical circles many people would know who he is. (Or Al Mohler etc. for that matter.)

I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. But heck, I run into people in northern Iowa who don't even know that Baptists immerse. "Do they still do that? I would have thought they gave that up years ago. How messy!" Words said exactly to me some months ago. If I'd ask the same population what "LifeWay" is or who Moore is I bet I'd get zero positive response.

The biggest evangelical church here in Sioux City is part of the Reformed Church of America and they sprinkle.

As we have always said in the Midwest when I was a Southern Baptist, "This ain't Nashville."

Well, regardless of his fame, it's clear that the Trump campaign recognizes the influence that Moore has within the Evangelical Christian community. He got an immediate, typical response. I think that might irk some moderate Baptists because they hold a similar position, but their spokespersons don't get anywhere near the kind of attention, or have anything close to the influence that Moore has.
