Both of these incidents are examples of what has been going on for a long time. Perhaps the biggest turnoff about conservative politics, at least for me, is that they've picked up on the dishonesty and media bias that has always been a part of the political process, and incorporated it into their own agenda. At least part of it is related to the association of many that came from the televangelist/television/media church group, and they already knew how easy it was to pluck money out of unsuspecting people by motivating them with some kind of cause. Now you've got the radio deejay turned news commentator crowd, like the Lamebrain and Beck, Rupert Murdock and others who have learned to use insecurity and lack of trust to turn a buck, and make some political hay on the side while doing it. Most people don't really do their own thinking, they let someone tell them what to think, and so are easily manipulated. The more sensational, outrageously false and unbelievable it is, the more many conservatives seem bent to want to believe it.
