There is a fascinating "covenant theology" present in American exceptionalism that says that we have in essence replaced Israel as the apple of God's eye. That's why the myth of being founded as a Christian nation is so important to some. They want to create the ideology that God favors the USA as his "new Israel."

Some people would do well to reread Ezekiel, watching for . The "abominations" are a secondary development.
