Again, global warming is no place near to ending freezing temperatures or snow; but is has caused larger precipitation events (including snowfalls). The map below shows that New England has been particularly hit with very heavy precipitation (map shows increase from 1958 to 2012).


Why is given and and and and I could go on but they all say it is due to sea surface temperatures being higher causing more moisture which drifts over land during snowfalls. Today, the area off shore of New England have a sea surface temperature about 4C warmer than normal.

For the US:



While there have been more records lows than highs in the US in 2014, globally speaking and look at the overall trend in this statistic - only 4 years since 1990 has there been more record colds than record highs and those years are very un-impressive compared to the red years (where record highs far outstrip record lows).

I have not been able to find the equivalent global statistic data but below is an instructional plot of the distribution of temperature anomalies (deviation from 1951-1980 average) for the Northern Hemisphere (Summer Months):



Note the shifting of the mean in the 1980’s, 1990’s and 2000’s to a "new normal" curve in the 2000’s. It is not that we never have negative anomalies but they are less frequent. Carefully looking one can see that there is a small increased variance as well.

Today Albany NY is setting a new all time record for consecutive days below freezing. This is the 18th such day. Current Temp 5f above 0, with wind chill of -11. no let up expected over the next few days. Tomorrow to be colder.

12: 10 Back from breakfast. Had to stand in line at the diner Temp is up to 17 going to 20. High tomorrow 6.

Ed's and Haruo’s weather reports are consistent with the Polar Vortex phenomena causing more cold from Central to Eastern US and more warmth in Alaska and West Coast.

This is all part of “Climate Disruption” (which one of my favorite authors, David Ray Griffin, prefers to mere “Climate Change”) that is the result of the rapid buildup of greenhouse gases and resultant “global warming”. This is not just changing the term used, it better represents the effects on the ground (“change" can be positive or negative, “disruption" has the negative consequences we have seen).

BTW, there are other serious “disruptions” caused by global warming as well besides weather-related matters, such as
-ocean pH / coral bleaching,
-food/water shortages,
-loss of biodiversity,
-sea level rise/coastal flooding
among them.

(although sarcastically given) give many other more specific and legitimate concerns (e.g. accelerating bird loss, Arctic tundra loss, health risks, aged deaths,...). Many are denialist machine manufactured items that to lead to their own sarcasm (e.g. conferences, expansion of university climate groups, deaths to reach 6 million {or the link says 6 billion, and is by Monckton}, brothels struggle). Many are repetitive (e.g. food prices rise, food prices soar). The title given to many of the links are inaccurate wrt the contents (e.g. melting earth). Many links are not there anymore (dead links, if they ever existed, e.g. crocodile sex). Many links do not claim GW causation but enhancement of an effect (e.g. AIDS). And some are inconclusive links (e.g. conflict with Russia) and some deserved to be debunked (e.g. gingerbread houses collapse). Nonetheless the span of GW ill effects is large and growing and this list catches many of them (despite its nefarious purpose); use with care.

Tidal Gauges and Satellite Altimetry agree. We have already seen at least 9 inches of rise since pre-industrial times. The current sea level rise rate is about 1 inch per decade. Lacking any feedback-induced amplification (which most scientists think will happen) that means 10 inches rise in the next century.

Coastal flooding:

The world is much bigger than just the Eastern US. And you know what? January 2015 was the 2nd hottest January ever globally according to the surface temperature measurements.
