In any objective analysis of American History, had FDR not instituted the New Deal, and brought about a major recovery from the depression, the US would never have had the capability to tool up to become the "Arsenal of Democracy," nor could it have modernized and upgraded its armed forces to defeat the Germans and the Japanese in WWII. Basically, Japan's war plans, and it's "East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" were based on the belief that the depression had weakened both the US and British economies beyond repair, and they were putting themselves in position to pick up the pieces. Had Roosevelt not put in place the ways and means to bring government into the picture to strengthen the economy, we'd likely be living under Japanese domination in the west, and a Nazi allied rump state in the east. Or there would have been a revolution boil up and we'd be communist.
I'm betting that we're headed in that direction, especially if Republicans are able to continue their policy of cutting government spending to give tax breaks to the rich and to force the population to pay the infrastructure and military protection bill for big business.
