It's an old tradition that is often resurrected. When I was taught history in high school and in middle school, slavery was so sanitized you could never have found anything objectionable or wrong in it. Also, people from my state who fought for the Confederacy were deemed heroes of state's rights. Of course, the treatment of the Indians was totally ignored, except for the Pocahontas story.
