Bernie's views would resonate with a majority of Americans, especially those under 40. Whether he could get past the obstacles posed by the massive amounts of money required to run, and the influence of the sources is another question. From what I've observed, he does have a very realistic view of the political structure, and as an independent has operated primarily as an influence, with the understanding that "my way or the highway" doesn't accomplish anything, but he gets some of his issues on the table by compromise and support.
I'd love to see him run, get absorbed into the dominant campaign among the Democrats, and be named as Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. We will have had a Democratic congress for two years by then, maybe people will be ready to consider a complete overhaul of health care and put in the Health Security plan that President Clinton originally proposed.
