When we built our house 10yrs ago, I looked onto solar but the cost/return wasn't close. Even now it doesn't make financial sense. My average electric bill is only $130/mo or so. I would look into solar just for hot water if it made sense and I could do it myself.
The route to non-carbon is economic, preferably the non-artificial one, i.e., not the algore get rich scheme of carbon credits.
BTW, I burn lots of wood, run 3 gas powered mowers, a chainsaw, blower, and weed eater, gas grill, and two cars...allowing me to and leave a really nice carbon footprint.
