This is the sort of news that is usually not mentioned on the big cable knees outlets. And that is why it is not framed as an issue nationally. If memory serves 22% of children in the US are living in poverty.

What scares me is that this kind of news doesn't enter into framing any of our national discussion of priorities. The War on Poverty from the 60's and 70's didn't solve the problems, so we have reordered our priorities to address the wants of those who have five houses, not those whose children may not get fed much on the weekends or when school is not in session.

We have a lot of children in poverty in Sioux City. I don't have stats for the poverty line but the closest elementary school to me has over 70% of its children who are eligible for free or reduced priced lunches.
Yet our Republican Governor Brandstad is cutting funding to local food banks in Iowa by $300,000.
