I've thought, since the first mega-multi screen theaters were built in the Houston area when I lived there, that they were accidents waiting to happen. The two closest to us, one with 16 screens, one with 24, were cheaply built, you could hear the sound from the next theater through the walls. They have exits out of each theater directly to the outside, not just as fire escapes, but to help disperse the crowds more quickly, to keep the traffic down that was coming inside. What you have is a place out in public where a thousand or more people gather every night, with a large parking area, very little (if any) inside or outside security, operated by a staff made up mainly of high school students.
The two mega theaters in our area of the Houston suburbs became purse snatching paradises shortly after they opened, and one of them was plagued with assaults and rapes. It seemed that every time we went, there were fender benders in the overcrowded parking lot, and cars streaming all around looking for spots, while people streamed out of the theaters, walking in and among the cars. Sometimes, they didn't have enough staff on duty to clean the theater after each showing.
So I am not surprised that someone loaded with automatic weapons and tear gas cannisters could prop open a door, get inside, and fire away. A cheap door alarm or a security guard on each side of the theater with exits could have prevented last night's shooting spree in Colorado.
