Emory's Joe Crespino examines his kind in the Book in Search of Another Country. In the end Hubbard would never be taken seriously by the likes of Judge Frank Johnson. Johnson could smell George Wallace on him. Then again with the exception of a few folks Alabama Democrats don't have an answer, politically, to Hubbard and his kind.
There is strong cell of folks who move forward outside the political carnival in the state. Pockets. The promise of Lincoln and Frank Johnson, even Gov Brewer and the late Tom Corts seem to have disappeared for a good ten years,and may never come back.
We can thank Paige Patterson and Albert Lee Brewer for that. I hope they are proud.
