Baptist Historians Affirm "Common Baptist Themes"

A group of 14 baptist historians which has been meeting annually for the past nine years has released a statement entitled

The identified common baptist themes are: sola Scriptura, liberty of conscience, believer’s baptism, personal experience of God, the priesthood of all believers, personal and communal devotion to God, the church as the body of Christ, local church autonomy, congregational polity, two ordinances (baptism/Lord’s Supper), voluntary cooperation among churches, religious liberty and the separation of church and state.

As the statement declares, “We believe these themes are still relevant and should continue to inform our Baptist heritage and witness.”

Side bar, Steven Miller is reevaluating Francis Schaeffer influence on the CR at his review of God's Own Party. You should google that review and the comments that follow, share it with the Historical community.
And Do look at how these themes played out with Hardy Clemons and Marney in Austin in the 50's to the chagrin of Pressler. Grand paper yet to be done on Marney and LBJ I'm convinced. Whoever does it should have some exhaustive discussions with Chandler Davidson at Rice.
