Jonathan Edwards and "chiliasm" among many other insights including periodical responses to evil occasions, a great paragraph in this exhaustive review and a grand one at that.

Thanks Randall. Will link this review to the discussion at baptistlife.com history forums where I have linked Garry Wills review from Ny Rev Bks. I'm waiting to ride to Rome Ga Barnes and Noble to give chapters of this book a read. From your 'race" reservations, it appears she also missed Lee Atwater's "****** memo" of Wuthnow's Rough Country and failed to explore the race history of such SBC takeover artists Pressler, Helms and Albert Lee Smith all with the baggage of Birch Society, White Citizens Council, Texas Regulars and other influences. To my satisfaction, nobody with the exceptional hints of Wuthnow has explored that aspect of the fundamentalist takeover of the SBC explicitly.....All that said to paraphrase Marshall Frady, all the revival enthusiasms, millennial urgencies and concern for souls that was part of my Baptist conservative rasin gave me a bent on life once I survived it would not trade for any other. Like the current testimony of the young Baptist woman from Texas who worked for the New Yorker, it gave a decided relish to life I would not nor cannot trade for any other. It is the stuff of my gut.
