He was a Seminary classmate of Randall Lolley and my Dad at SEBTS. Stewart Newman had some words of praise for Self in the chat with my Dad and me in 77 at the Shoney's in Gaffney SC.

In coming days I will add some thoughts on his relationship with James Deloach and Ed Young, Deloach a classmate and Young who I think was a few years after them at SEBTS. Deloach was a chief detractor of Randall Lolley on the Board when Jerry Vines of the Peace Committee and the Helms organization took over the Seminary. Ed Young was embraced by the Billy Graham organization as early as the late 60s when he was pastor of FBC Taylors South Carolina. George Beverley Shea was a member of that church, and Deloach went on staff with Young at FBC Columbia and the two advanced the Pressler Agenda from then on right on to the present time advancing Ted Cruz for President.

At the 1986 Atlanta SBC Self was standing with my Dad and Wash Post political writer Tom Edsall at the bottom of the escalator as I descended. After Introductions Edall and I went to the press room for a private conversation. Edsall said "Stephen, the way your Dad was talking about you coming down the stairs, I thought it was Moses or something".

Self understood all this and fought the Good fight.

Self once told me he called Ed Young and asked him why he got himself all tangled up in the Pressler mess; phone conversation in the early 80s with Young. He said Young said: " Reagan, Thatcher, the whole world is going to the Right and I wanna go too". I asked Self if I could quote him and he said no problem.

John Pierce has sterling tribute to Self at Baptists Today site and facebook page.

Obituary for Bill Self

Postby Stephen Fox » Fri Jan 15, 2016 2:30 pm

In the tributes to him on his obituary page it was noted that he was a good friend of Earl Stallings who was pastor of FBC Marietta by 1970. Before that Stallings was at FBC Birmingham, Alabama and was one of the eight ministers to whom Martin Luther King Jr sent the letter from the Birmingham jail, an episode in American history best covered in Jonathan Raban's book blessed are the Peacemakers.

Hopefully Johnny Pierce of Baptists Today can amplify Self's friendship with Stallings and their evolution with President Carter after the letter from the Jail. Self also had a great friendship with Frank Harrington of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Whatever progress or backslides Atlanta might have taken in the last half othe 20th Century cannot be for want of Great Preaching in that time.
