Ed: Was any thing said about her husband Daniel or her brother Shubal? Both where leaders in the establishment of the the sandy creek Association in NC although they where originally from New England. I have seen reports that Martha was a more popular preacher than either Shubal or Daniel. I am really surprised that You haven't heard of her Hauro. She has been a heroine of Baptist Women in Ministry. At least as long as I can recall since my first Baptist History course about 1958. Many CBF churches Have a Martha Stearns Marshall day in February each year. I have known of some ABC/USA churches that also have this day. American Baptist Historian H.C. Vedder mentions both of the men in his Short History of the Baptist published by The American Baptist Publication Society in 1909 W/O mention of Martha. Bill Leonard corrects that in his Baptist Ways Published by Judson Press. Leonard also talks about Martha and her sister- in-law Sarah Johnston Stearns under "Women and Churches Early Ordinations" in his Baptists In America Published by Columbia University Press in 2005.
