Allen, Clemons et. Al on the Marney/Pressler era

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu Mar 14, 2013 4:24 pm

Before the likes of Jimmy Allen and Hardy Clemons pass away, and while there may be time to get Chandler Davidson of Rice to talk, some Baptist historian needs to explore exactly what was the relationship, what was the burr that moved Carlyle Marney from FBC Austin in the late 50's and what role in larger picture did Pressler or his network play in the race matter.

Allen and Hardy Clemons may remember something. Roger Paynter is at FBC Austin now and surely there are some oral histories.

Some big facts are known about Marney's leavetaking.

But a few years ago Chandler Davidson and others who knew Pressler's larger network in the Texas legislature and his father before him say the Houston Pressler and their oil interests weren't happy with the likes of Marney in particular on race. And apparently Virginia Connally and LBJ and that group were inching in another direction.

Pressler historically sided with Coke Stevenson in the Senate race of 48.

What part of that affected Marney at FBC Austin.

Is there anymore to be said?
