Alabama CBF and Immigration

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Oct 11, 2011 12:33 pm

With this post I am hoping to enlist some new participants to this board.

Alabama CBF gathering in Huntville Oct 10 had a breakout on Immigration led by Robbie White of Locust Grove Baptist Church, who moonlights as an instructor at Athens St. College.

I was unable to attend but did text several pointers to the breakout.

I am hoping Robbie or someone with Bama CBF will give us a report here about that breakout, and maybe we can have participation here as CBF of Bama in particular wrestles with this ongoing story.

I posted a comment at UMC Bishop Willimon's Peculiar prophet blog so may want to see, and here is Parham's latest, with several links to earlier stories on immigration.

One thing I asked the group to consider was active letters to local papers, further out in the hinterland the better.
There were two great letters in the Bham News yesterday I hope to post here shortly

Lowell Barron on Immigration

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Oct 11, 2011 3:30 pm

Wayne Flynt has some scorching words about Lowell Barron's tenure as an Auburn trustee in his recently published Keeping the Faith in Alabama. However Barron has an interesting tack on immigration in a fairly long column published in the Oct 7, Friday, www.times-journal.com . I have tried to google the column up but unsuccesful so far.
I do hope Bama CBF leadership will ad it to the mix as we try to be wise as serpents on this matter.....

Media relations for Alabama CBF was present for the breakout and informs me she should have a story up at ABPnews.com soon.

Thanks KeithE for this report. Make sure your daughter digests
Rachel Johnson's immigration piece easily googled at Huffingtonpost, and in the October issue of Baptists Today.

Word for the Month of Collinsville HS where my Mother was 1939 graduate is: "Perseverance"

I may blog later about that.

Had an interesting conversation with the Pastor of FUMC Ft Payne this morning. He was gracious. About four mins in total we coverred Judge Frank Johnson, some of the thinking of his church leadership; and MLKing's letter from the Bham Jail as well as my comment on Bishop Willimon's Oct 6 Peculiar Prophet blog; which he had read.

Said he would be looking for my letter I submitted to the FPayne Times-journal.

Maybe it was the context in which your daughter heard the English as 2nd language thought from Texas; but leading CBF Hispanic advocate in National CBF Breakout in Atlanta few years ago, said learning English is major pathway to full citizenship in America; idea promoted by former San Antonio Mayor in his initiative Pathways to Citizenship.

Wayne Flynt: Bill "Meanest, most Hateful"

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu Oct 13, 2011 1:19 pm

http://blog.al.com/live/2011/10/wayne_f ... litic.html

His thoughts coincide with Collinsville Baptist Deacon Donnie Myers, former Asst School Superintendent for Dekalb County, Alabama who says it was constructed with "malice."

GW. Roberts Building Library Board Member Myles Smith, an active member of the Church of Christ expressed similar sentiments to me in strong conversation last night

Alabama's Eunie Smith and Kris Kobach/Fox letter

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu Oct 20, 2011 12:02 pm

See my post of October 20 at SBC Trends in Eunie Legacy thread.

And my letter to Ft. Payne times Journal that called on more informed Christian witness in the 2nd most percentage Hispanic population county in the state.
My letter was published last Thursday, Oct 13

Here is link to my letter in FPTJ. They were savvy enough in online publication to link Rachel Johnson's piece.

Marshall or Dekalb County Alabama

Is a showing possible in the heart of the national discussion on Alabama Immigration law. Which Baptist or Methodist church will make the invitation to host an ecumenical dialogue featuring Bishop Willimon and Robert Parham?
