Great video: Siegenthaler gets to the Heart of the Civil Rights movement as it played in Crackerland: "You gotta Love Those Bastards!: Lot more commentary to come

My call to Will Campbell

Postby Stephen Fox » Tue Apr 30, 2013 1:24 pm

I posted this on the facebook wall of the article above:

[quote] [In the early 80's I called Will Campbell on the phone from my Grandmothers house in Ga. Frat boys and other clowns were having a circus on National TV calling for the Execution of John Roach in my homestate of S.C.; Roach had an IQ of around 60 best I remember. I had learned about Will at Furman and by that time read Brother to a Dragonfly and several Marshall Frady tributes to the man who was already a legend. I was pretty emotional when Campbell answered the phone. I told him why I was calling and he could sense my state. He said: "Hell Son, get a grip; the State of S.C. has its mind made up and there's not a **** thing I can do!". Great man. Was an honor to know personally the Furman Chaplain who read Campbell's eulogy for Marshall Frady at Frady's funeral in 2004./quote]

Hal Crowther on Will Campbell

Postby Stephen Fox » Thu May 22, 2014 10:25 am

Crowther also did a great tribute to Marshall Frady in Oxford American, one you can find in his collection, Gather at the River. His wife Lee Smith was on panel with Ron Rash at the SC Book Festival last weekend in Columbia SC
